Mornington Specialist Development School

The Mornington Special Developmental School (SDS) project was a major redevelopment initiative delivered under the Victorian School Building Authority, aimed at creating modern, inclusive learning environments specifically tailored to students with disabilities. Central to the project was the construction of a new purpose-built main building that supports high-level special needs education, complemented by the refurbishment of existing facilities. The project prioritised accessibility, functionality, and safety, integrating state-of-the-art classrooms, therapy areas, and outdoor learning zones to meet contemporary standards for inclusive education while responding to the needs of a growing local community.

The new main building delivers a significant uplift in functionality for the school, providing modern, accessible spaces that better support high-level special needs education. Centralised community and specialist learning areas-such as art, food technology, and a multi-purpose space-enhance flexibility and enable a broader range of educational and community programs. Purpose-built special needs learning areas flank the main building, each equipped with shared amenities, breakout zones, and withdrawal spaces to support diverse learning requirements. Throughout the facility, strong connections to outdoor learning areas promote engagement, inclusion, and a seamless flow between internal and external environments, improving daily use for both students and staff.
